Commonly Asked Questions

Answers to the questions we hear most often from prospective guests.

Families often wonder whether they qualify for a stay at the Fisher House and what the referral process involves. Eligibility is generally tied to a patient receiving care at a nearby medical facility, and referrals are typically coordinated through hospital staff or a patient's care team. Prospective guests are encouraged to reach out early, since availability can change quickly depending on demand and the number of homes on site. The staff and volunteer coordinators are happy to walk families through each step, from submitting the necessary paperwork to understanding the length-of-stay guidelines. Questions about verification requirements or priority status are best directed to the house coordinators, who can provide clear and current answers.

Many guests ask what amenities and services are available during their stay. Each home is designed to feel comfortable and welcoming, with private guest rooms, shared common areas, and a fully equipped kitchen where families can prepare meals together. Laundry facilities, internet access, and a dedicated playroom for children help make longer stays more manageable. The houses are located within walking distance of the hospital, which is a significant comfort for families balancing medical appointments and rest. Volunteers and staff keep the homes clean, stocked, and ready for each new family, ensuring that guests can focus on what matters most: being present for their loved ones during treatment and recovery.

Donations and volunteer support are essential to keeping the Fisher House running smoothly, and many people ask how they can contribute. Monetary gifts help cover operating costs, while in-kind donations of household items, toiletries, and food are always appreciated when they match current needs. Individuals and groups can also volunteer their time in a variety of ways, from preparing meals to helping with light maintenance and hospitality tasks. Those interested in supporting the mission should review the donation guidelines to understand what items are currently accepted and how to schedule a drop-off. Every contribution, no matter the size, directly enhances the comfort and dignity of the families who stay here.

First-time visitors often want to know what to expect when they arrive and how the daily rhythm of the house works. Upon check-in, guests are given a tour of the facility and an overview of house rules, safety protocols, and common areas. Families share the space with other guests who are navigating similar circumstances, which often creates a supportive and understanding community. Quiet hours, meal schedules, and visitor policies are clearly posted to keep the environment calm and respectful for everyone. The staff and volunteers are available throughout the day to answer questions and offer assistance, and families are encouraged to speak up if they need anything. The goal is to make every stay as restful and stress-free as possible.
